The 2025 FMA WA Conference, Smart Buildings: The Next Generation of FM, brought together more than 250 professionals from across the facilities management sector.
Held at the Pan Pacific Perth and organised by the WA branch of the Facility Management Association of Australia, the event focused on how buildings are evolving and what that means for the people who manage them.
Darren Arthur, WA Automation & Controls Manager at Airmaster, took part in a panel alongside speakers from property management, integrated service providers, facilities management and consulting to discuss what smarter buildings look like in practice.

Drawing on his experience supporting clients across a range of sites and systems, Darren spoke about the growing importance of connected technologies and data-informed decision-making. He highlighted how digital asset registers give site teams and service providers clearer visibility, and how live data can shift maintenance from reactive tasks to more strategic, planned servicing. More than anything, he focused on the ability to translate building system data into clear, practical actions.
“It was a great opportunity to represent technical service providers and talk about the real tools available to FMs today,” Darren said. “Not just the theory, but the how.”
This focus on practical tools and outcomes reflects how Airmaster approaches building management more broadly. Our teams work closely with facility managers to deliver HVAC and mechanical services, building automation and controls, energy efficiency strategies, and intelligent asset management. Across all of this is a strong commitment to improving operational performance and minimising environmental impact.
Solutions like Airmaster’s Intelligent Maintenance program, along with system upgrades and smart building integration, are already helping clients reduce energy costs, increase system reliability, and make more informed decisions about the long-term health of their assets.
WA State Manager Matt Wisniewski, who attended alongside members of the local team, said the conference was “exceptionally well executed and thoroughly enjoyed by our team and clients alike.”
FMA WA Committee Chair Mathuran Marianayagam reinforced the value of the event;
"Bringing all the stakeholders together is essential for us to achieve a future-fit built environment. The conversations looked at practical, data-informed solutions and real-life examples facilities mangers can apply within their buildings today."
Throughout the event, there was a strong sense of shared direction. Whether through technology, service partnerships or better use of data, the industry is clearly moving toward a more proactive and connected future.

We'd like to thank the FMA WA Committee and FMA Board for the chance to participate and especially acknowledge the leadership of Mathuran Marianayagam (Committee Chair), Ian Harwood and Reena Strehle (Conference MCs) and Darrin Haverhoek (Panel Moderator).
The Facility Management Association of Australia is the nation’s peak body for facilities management, working to support members through professional development, advocacy, and connection. Its WA branch plays a key role in shaping and strengthening the local industry through events like this, which bring together professionals from all parts of the built environment.
